Brightpool stared at the little black kit intently, then up at the starry sky. After a few moments she looked back down at the cats in the clearing around her, then focused her gaze on Briarkit and Rowanblaze. "Will you be taking her on as your apprentice?" she asked, her voice cool and calm. She saw Briarkit brighten up incredibly, her blue eyes shining, full of hope. This was clearly the destiny she wanted.
Briarkit felt hope surging through her paws. She held her tail up high in the air and she felt the same hope that was in her heart creep into her eyes as she looked from the snowy she-cat to Rowanblaze. She'd get her answer here and now! Hopefully...

"What?" was Rowanblaze's first response. He had so many emotions flowing through him, he wasn't even sure what to say. Yet it only took him seconds to flow out a response. "Brightpool! You can't be serious! She's only just a kit, and on top of that she's (not the right color!) just snuck out of camp and followed us up here!" After taking a pause, his fur suddenloy bristled and he added, "Besides, you're not the boss of the medicine cats! You can't speak for all of StarClan, either!" He didn't mean to get so upset with Brightpool. Or Briarkit, for that matter. He was just upset that StarClan was trying to replace him. That led him to his last argument. "Besides, I've only been medicine cat for a few seasons! Surely I don't need an apprentice right now!" He wanted to add 'I'm just learning what to do myself!' but that would only work against his case. Surely the whole of the cats gathered could feel the anxiety flowing out of his persona?

Briarkit felt all of her hopes come crashing down on top of her. She felt her legs quiver and buckle underneath her, as if the weight of her grief crushing down on her shoulders was too much to bear. She looked down at the stony ground, right next to the Moonpool, completely crestfallen. She felt a warm body press up to hers, waves of comfort and understanding coming off of it. She looked up for only a moment and saw Brightpool. She pushed against the she-cat, as if using her for strength. Then her voice rumbled through her, echoing and vibrating through Briarkit as well. "She doesn't look as if she'll be an apprentice for another moon or two. But cats destined for the life of a medicine cat are generally drawn to the medicine cats den... and that's how it is. StarClan chooses these cats. But it is ultimately your decision." the words rang around the clearing. Briarkit didn't want to be here anymore. She wanted to curl up next to Ivorykit and Robinfeather and just sleep and sleep for moons and moons and moons not ever having to wake up.

Rowanblaze looked down in a mixture of shame and pity. He felt terrible for Briarkit, and also for himself. He knew he had never been special like the other medicine cats. He was just in the right place at the right time. It wasn't fair that this kit could only be a few moons old, yet be chosen by StarClan to be a medicine cat. She was already better than him. She wouldn't need his help at all.
He suddenly looked up and gazed at the Moonpool. He didn't want to share tongues with StarClan anymore. Surely they would make him chose Briarkit to be his apprentice! Then they would want nothing to do with him, and his Clan would see that all he was was a fake.
"Maybe I should take her home." Rowanblaze mewed softly.

Some kind of emotion ripped through Briarkit. She wasn't entirely sure what it was. It was a combination of anger, fear and hopelessness. "I can get back by myself." she said, and she pulled away from the pretty she-cat she was leaned against. She looked into her eyes, and felt comfortable for a moment. Then she looked around at the other medicine cats and bolted down the beaten path to the moonpool. She was small, but she made her paws carry her as fast as they could. Halfway back to the camp, she slowed down and looked up at the stars through the trees. She let out a deep sigh, and wished she could talk to that snowy white she-cat... that cat seemed almost like a StarClan cat walking on Earth! Like an infinite abyss of wisdom. She tore her eyes away from the sky and back at her paws as she trudged back to camp.

"Briarkit! Come back!" Rowanblaze cried as the black kit tumbled away from him. He shot all three medicine cats in the clearing a look as if to say, "Back off. I can control my Clan." He then raced down the path after the shekit. StarClan was not on his side today. He hadn't come across her at all, even by following her scent. He came to the enterance to the camp, and a startled Smokesong mewed, "Back so soon?" Rowanblaze just nodded his head. The kit obviously hadn't come through here, and if she had, she had slipped by the guard. When he was int he camp, he figured he needed to check for Briarkit. He figured he could check either his den or the Nursery. He started with the Nursery. Trying not to startle anyone, the brown and white tom peeked his head inside the nursery.

Briarkit and just settled into her nest by Ivorykit when she saw Rowanblaze's eyes gleaming through the entrance. She adjusted her position, curling up and laying her head on her paws and resting her tail over her nose. She didn't care of Rowanblaze noticed she was there or even awake. He wouldn't just explode into the nursery in the middle of the night while there was sleeping queens and kits.

Seeing that Briarkit was safe, Rowanblaze sighed slightly and returned to his den. He hadn't meant to hurt the poor kit, and he hoped that she could forgive him. For the meantime, he went into his den and curled up to sleep. He had strange dreams about a pool of pure white, and suddenly a small black drop fell into the pool. Instead of turning the pool completely black, it turned it an ugly gray color.
When Rowanblaze got up, he headed to Foxstar's den right away. He climbed up onto the Highledge (?) and coughed slightly, announcing his existance.

Foxstar had been lying awake in her den for a while just waiting for the Clan to start getting active. She would overlook the Clan, but only when they needed overlooking. No one was going out on patrols yet, though Echosong was probably just about to organize some. While she was contemplating getting up and out of her den, she heard a cat at the entrance to her den and recognized Rowanblaze. "You may come in. What do you need, Rowanblaze?" she mewed, curiously.

"Ah, Foxstar." he mewed and stepped into the den. He always tried to act more important than he was when he was around the leader, and even the deputy. "Well, I have something I think you should know. Last night, as you do already know, was the medicine cats meeting. I met up with the other three cats, and when we got to the Moonpool, we discovered that...uhm, Briarkit was following us." He stopped there, not sure if he should continue. he flicked his tail nervously, wishing alol of this could jsut go away.

"Hm? Really? Maybe she has an interest in becoming your apprentice. I see her helping you out with herbs a lot..." Foxstar made her observation. She thought that the little black kit seemed very eager to learn about the herbs and the life of a medicine cat. But she did just sneak out of camp. But Foxstar decided she'd discuss that with her later. Maybe Rowanblaze would be present. Maybe not. Foxstar was an enigma. You just never know.

"Yeah, that's the thing..." Rowanblaze said. He didn't want to tell Foxstar about how he was a failure of a medicine cat. He didn't want to tell her about his petty fears and how StarClan hated him. He didn't want to tell her about how he was just at the wrong place and the wrong time and was really just a lazy mooch. Instead, he chose to say, "Do you really think I am ready for an apprentice? I think it would be best if Briarkit chose to study other things. I'm still a fairly new medicine cat."

Foxstar shrugged. She didn't see why not. "StarClan chooses these cats though... if she's truly drawn to the Medicine cats den like that, there's a pretty good chance StarClan wills it." she said, after a while. "She's a clever little kit. You two can figure everything out together. She won't be apprenticed for another moon or so, but maybe you'll think about it." she finished up, then stood and shook out her pelt.

Rowanblaze wasn't sure what to say to that. It was obvious that the leader was done talking with him, but he wasn't finished talking with her. Deciding not to get on the shecats nerves, he bowed his head to her, purred out a "Thank you." and left the den. He wondered if Briarkit and Ivorykit would be up so early in the morning. He stood on Highledge and watched Smokesong and Lightbreeze head out on a patrol. He wondered what it would be like to be a warrior instead of a medicine cat. What if he would have to switch once Briarkit got her warrior name and became a full medicine cat?

Briarkit was laying outside of the nursery, her sister sitting next to her. Briarkit had her tail wrapped over her eyes and she looked like she was sleeping. Ivorykit looked at her, her eyes full of worry. Her sister had gone somewhere last night. But where? And since she got back she's just been laying there practically lifeless... it took Ivorykit quite a bit of effort to even persuade Briarkit to get out of the nursery!
