Ripplestream entered the camp with a mout full of freshkill. As he headed toward the freshkill pile, he almost tripped over three kits playing in the middle of camp.
"Got you!" hissed a solid brown tom, Volekit. He was holding down a gray kit, Mistkit.
"Not anymore!" came the voice of another kit, and a tortoise shell shekit, Mosskit, leapt onto Volekit.
"Hey!" Ripplestream scolded after dropping his prey on the pile, "Move over toward the nursery. We don't want you kits getting run over."
"Yes, Ripplestream." the three kits mewed together, and they chased each other closer to the nursery.

Mintkit yawned next to her brother, Wolfkit. She was bored and Wolfkit wouldn't be any fun today! All he wanted to do was sit and watch the other kits play. How boring! But once the other kits got scolded, and sent back to the nursery, Mintkit stood up. Now was her chance to have some fun! She watched the unsuspecting bunch and pounced her way into the middle of them. "Hi!" she mewed enthusiastically.

"Hi Mintkit!" Volekit happily chirped. The other two smiled at her as well. They were all happy to have another kit to play with! "Got you!" Mosskit suddenly screeched, and she leapt on top of Mintkit and pinned her to the ground.
Ripplestream just shook his head as he watched the kits play. He was happy that Mintkit seemed to be getting along with them. He headed off towardf the nursery and poked his head in. "Snowprint?" he asked.

Seeing his sister being taken down, Wolfkit went into action. He bolted and smashed into Mosskit so that the two kits tumbled away from Mintkit. Wolfkit turned his head to see Mintkit get up and then triumphantly mewed, "Got you!" lifting his head proudly.
Mintkit rolled her eyes but purred affectionately at her brother "Now you wanna play?" then cuffed him lightly over the ears.
Snowprint looked up when she heard someone call her name. "Yes?" she meowed, recognizing Ripplestream at the entrance to the nursery.

"That was mean!" Mosskit cried.
This caused Volekit and Mistkit both to leap at Wolfkit, knocking him off of their sister.
Ripplestream slowly walked into the nursery, careful not to let his large shape run into anything or break anything. "I just wondered how you were doing. It must be rough, taking in three kits that aren't even yours."

Mintkit watched as Wolfkit squealed in shock when the two other kits attacked him. "Hey! Two against one! No fair!" she squeaked, leaping over to her brother and pushing against the two kits ont top of him.
Snowprint let out a purr as she thought about the three little kits. "No, it's absolutely fine. I love them as if they were my own. I don't mind the extra effort or work." she meowed. Mintkit and Wolfkit loved the company anyways.

Mosskit jumped on top of Mintkit, and now there was a huge jumbling mess of kittens in the middle of camp.
Ripplestream purred, "That's good. It was so nice of Larkstar to allow them to stay. Those poor kits would have died by themselves out there." He watched the kittens for a little bit longer, then asked, "Would you like me to bring you something to eat?"

Snowprint nodded and meowed, "If it isn't too much to ask." and rested her head back down on her paws. She figured it would be a good idea to get out of the nursery for a bit. She sat up and stretched her legs forward, and waited for Ripplestream to exit the den so she could get out and look at her kits and her adopted kits.

"It's fine." he responded. He turned and pushed his way out of the nursery, his muscled frame managing to not knock anything over. He trotted off toward the freshkill pile. He picked up a fish and headed back toward the Queen and kits. He set the fish down in front of the queen and asked, "Are they big enough to be weened now? Should I get them a fish as well?"

Snowprint was just about to open her mouth to reply to the big warrior, but was cut off when Minnowcloud burst into the camp as if she had a whole pack of dogs on her trail. "Larkstar! A cat's been killed! Riverheart is dead!" Minnowcloud screeched in a grieving, and frightened yowl.
Mintkit and Wolfkit immediately stopped playing around when the she-cat burst into the clearing. They were frightened, and scampered off to their mother. Mintkit cast a glance back at the other three kits, signaling them to come along to Snowprint with them. Mintkit cared about her adopted siblings as much as she cared about Wolfkit!
Larkstar stepped out from her den when she heard a cat yowling. After a few moments, she made sense of the words and fear gripped her belly. "Riverheart? Where? How was he killed?" she asked Minnowcloud as she thought quickly of cats who she could take out on the patrol with her to check out the scene.
Minnowcloud waved her tail towards the exit of the camp, too frightened to speak. She heard her leader call out "Ripplestream, Reedwhisker and Lilystream, come with me. You too Minnowcloud, of course." then ran out of the camp. Minnowcloud lead the cats to the body of Riverheart, far away from the camp. His body lay on the ground next to the small thunderpath. "Our patrol found him like this. We have no idea what happened, or when it happened."

Ripplestream had moved away from Snowprint and up to the newcomer once she rushed in. He had planned to ask to come with the patrol, but he was chosen anyway. He rushed out of the clearing, Reedwhisker close behind. Her fish lay on the ground where she had been sitting only moments before.
Mosskit and Mistkit darted back to Snowprint with the other two kits. Volekit, on the other paw, decided he could handle whatever had killed the elder warrior. "Wait for me!" he called as he saw the two gold warriors leave. He trailed after them, going as fast as he could.
"It wasn't a Monster," Dappledance purred, who had been on patrol with Minnowcloud at the time, "The sent is stale. Of course, there's plenty of ShadowClan scent around. I bet it was them!"

Ivyshine was standing close by the exit and saw little Volekit going after the warriors. It didn't take her too long to catch up to the tumbling kit and scoop him up. Mumbling around his fur, she mewed softly, "No little one. It's dangerous for a kit by himself. Let's get you back to the nursery." and began to pad off to the nursery. Snowprint and all the kits were in the nursery, Snowprint huddled protectively around her kits. "Ivyshine will get to him, just stay here..." she heard the queen mumble to the four kits. Ivyshine plopped Volekit down next to the other four and then hurried over to her own kits, and curled around them, waiting for the news about Riverheart...
Lilystream was pacing back and forth around the place. She cast worried glances over in the direction of ShadowClan and at Riverheart's lifeless body. She had only a little doubt that ShadowClan were the killers here. "He's covered in ShadowClan stench as well. But it's hard to tell if that means they killed him, since we're right near the border..." she mewed worriedly, not sure what to think anymore.
Larkstar felt rage pulsing through her as she examined the silver warrior. She sniffed at his pelt and glared off in the direction of the ShadowClan camp, then back at Riverheart, then at the camp again. "ShadowClan." she spat the words out of her mouth, then turned to the patrol. "We'll carry him back to camp and have Snowbird examine the body." she said, her tone gentle. She was sure her Clanmates were taken aback by the death, and didn't want to sound too harsh. It wasn't them she was angry with.

"And what of ShadowClan?" Ripplestream asked. He didn't want to jump to conclusions either, but it just looked like ShadowClan could have been the only thing that could have killed such a brave warrior.
"Yeah, what are we going to do about them? Attack?" Dappledance asked. Her tail flicked back and forth in a mixture of excitement and anger.
"Awww!" Volekit cried, "But I want to go help too! Please?"
Coldpaw was just coming out of the apprentices den when he heard Volekit's cry. "Help with what?" he asked, clueless as always.

Snowprint shook her head at the little kit. "This isn't a job for kits. We'll wait here like the rest of the Clan." she mewed softly, then rasped her tongue over the kits fur, hoping to calm him down. Wolfkit and Mintkit were huddling as close to their adopted siblings as possible, each trying to comfort them. Snowprint purred lightly, and continued to lick Volekit.
Mintkit looked up at Coldpaw, away from her four adopted siblings. "Riverheart... died." her words came out in a high pitched squeal. "Volekit wanted to help find out what happened." she mewed.
"We'll see what happened to Riverheart, let the Clan mourn and build a strong case against ShadowClan. It was clearly them, right? So that should be no problem." Larkstar meowed, and lightly gripped Riverheart's body, ready to bring him back to camp. Minnowcloud picked him up from another side, her eyes full of grief for the lost Clanmate.

The cats nodded their heads. Reedwhisker and Ripplestream nudged themselves under the dead cats body to help hold him long enough to get to the camp.
"I want to help now!" Volekit complained. He didn't bother to pull himself away from Snowprint though. In fact, he felt like curling up and sleeping. So that's exactly what he did.
"No!" Coldpaw yowled, "Snowbird! Ivystalker! Larkstar! Where are they? Did Lilystream forget to let me in on this?"
Hearing his name, Ivystalker jumped down from the rock he was sunning on and purred, "Hm? What do you need?" He had actually been partially asleep, so had missed everything until his name brought him back to his senses.
