Oceanmask curled her tail around her three kits as she sat in the nursery. She had temporarily given up her Deputy duties to Brightstreak as she nursed her kits. She could hear the shecat outside giving patrol orders to the few cats that were gathered around her. The Clan had started to get sick, and every cat that even thought about coughing had been sent to rest. Oceanmask herself wanted to be out hunting, but her fear for her kits kept her inside the nursery with them. She was so scared that she would lose them, especially her smallest kit, Sweetkit. She gave each of her kits a lick on the head, then winced as she heard a rough coughing come from the medicine cats den. It sounded like her leader.

Grasswhistle came into the nursery, worried about his kits and mate. "This sickness is getting so ridiculous." he mewed to her, staring at his kits, but not going near them. He didn't want to bring any outside sickness to the safety of his kits in the nursery.

Even though Grasswhistle was her mate, Oceanmask still wrapped her tail even tighter around her three kits. "It is," she mewed, "I hope Wishingstar can recover..." She wasn't ready to be leader. She would miss the old tom too much if he left them. She couldn't do it by herself. Besides, would she even become leader while she was a queen?
Herbleaf, on the other side of the nursery, added, "What will we do if we all get sick? What if WindClan gets destroyed?"
Eaglekit squeaked, "Are we going to go to StarClan, Herbleaf?"

Cloverkit gasped a little at Eaglekit's and Herbleaf's questions. "StarClan would never do that to us!" she mewed. Cloverkit was a SMART LITTLE KITTEN. "There has to be Four Clans. Always! Right, Oceanmask?"

"Right," Oceanmask mewed to the little kitten, nodding her head, "We will be alright." She wasn't completely sure of herself, but she knew she had to keep her clans hopes up. Especially when she saw the look in Eaglekit's eyes and the slight shake in Herbleaf's head when she was asked a question.
"Herbleaf, will you watch my kits while Grasswhistle and I hunt?" Oceanmask asked, "I need to talk to Brightstreak as well and see what we can get done."
Herbleaf nodded her head and moved to the three youngest kits.
Oceanmask thanked her and pushed out of the nursery, calling to Grasswhistle to follow.
The deputy walked up to Brightstreak, seeing her send a patrol out of the camp.
"Brightstreak! What still needs to be done?" Oceanmask asked.
The mostly white shecat looked surprised to see the queen, but quickly answered, "Well, the border patrols have finished. Nothing unusual there. We are in the middle of Leaf-Fall though, and there's not much prey. Why don't we all go out for a hunting patrol?"
Oceanmask nodded her head and headed out of the camp, the other she-cat following. She only looked back when she heard another terrible cough from the Medicine cats den.

Grasswhistle followed after his mate and Brightstreak, worrying for his kits as they were left alone with Herbleaf. He hoped that she didn't put any despairing thoughts in their heads. At some point along the walk, a small hacking cough escaped through his mouth despite his efforts to hold it back.

Oceanmask and Brightstreak both stopped and looked back when they heard a cough.
"Grasswhistle!" Oceanmask exclaimed, "You're getting sick! Go back and see Brightpool right away! I'll come with you!"
Brightstreak nodded her head and mewed, "Yes, I'll go join one of the other hunting parties. It's alright."
Oceanmask nodded thankfully at the cat as she sped away. She was secretly thankful Grasswhistle hadn't gotten too close to the kits.
Oceanmask hearded the sick tom back to the camp, which they were close to, and pushed him into the medicine cats den.
The deputy carefully stood outside and peeked in, not wanting to get sick. She saw Wishingstar right away, and his mate, Morningcloud, was laying next to him. Neither looked very well. She also noticed Leafstorm and Kestrelpaw in the other corner of the den. Both looked better, but still not too great.

Brightpool was treating some of her patients when she noticed that Oceanmask and Grasswhistle were standing at the entrance to her den. "Not you two as well...?" she mewed, letting her eyes fill with worry for a moment before regaining herself again.

"Just Grasswhistle," Oceanmask replied, "I'm alright for now. Is there anything I can do for you, Brightpool?"
It must have been hard on her, not having an apprentice during a time like this. But all Oceanmask could do for her was harass her. I mean, offer to help.

Brightpool shook her head. "Just go to the nursery and... try not to let any warriors in. We don't need any more cats getting sick." she mewed, and touched her tail to Grasswhistle's shoulder before pointing towards a den that an apprentice had set up for the sit cats to sleep in as they arrived in her den.

Oceanmask sighed. She wished she could help more, but there wasn't anything she could do, apparently. That made her want to go and check on her kits though.
She headed back to the nursery like she was told and wrapped her tail around her kits. She slept almost a whole day away, and was only shocked awake when a young apprentice, she barely recognized her as Yewpaw, ran in and screeched, "Morningcloud is dead! She has gone to visit StarClan!"
Herbleaf gave a low yowl. She had recently shared the nursery with Morningcloud, and the two had become good friends.
Oceanmask got up, nudged each of her kits to make sure they were still healthy, then headed out of the nursery. She saw that the remaining warriors had already brought Morningcloud out to the middle of the clearing. Wishingstar had also managed to move into the clearing, but how he did it Oceanmask was not sure.
The white tom was sharing tongues with his mate. The old, tortoise shell queen looked beautiful, Wishingstar had made sure of that. Oceanmask wanted to give the queen her final goodbyes, but she was scared she would get sick herself. She also had other things to do.
"Grasswhistle? Brightpool?" she called.

Lightwing heard Oceanmask calling for Brightpool and Grasswhistle. She walked away from Morningcloud to speak to the she-cat, "Brightpool is still in the medicine cat's den with Grasswhistle..." she mewed. The tom had gotten a lot worse very quickly.

Oceanmask's heart skipped a beat when she heard that her mate was still in the medicine cats den. She thanked Lightwing quickly, then headed off in the direction of the medicine cats den.
Brightstreak had walked toward Lightwing and Oceanmask when she saw the Clan deputy. She needed to talk. But, the deputy was off as quickly as she had come.
"What's going on?" Brightstreak asked Lightwing.
When Oceanmask made it to the medicine cats den, she didn't even hesitate when she went inside.
"Grasswhistle!" she cried.

Grasswhistle was laying on his side, his breathing kind of weezy and shallow. He wasn't feeling so great. He heard Oceanmask's voice and quickly picked up his head, letting out another hacking cough. "Oceanmask." he mewed lightly, his voice filled with affection. HE FELT A BIT BETTER JUST SEEING THE SHE-CAT.

"Grasswhistle! Are you alright? How are you feeling?" Oceanmask questioned. She rushed over to him quickly. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Leafstorm and Kestrelpaw were still in the den. They were both sleeping, and seemed about as bad as Grasswhistle. Hopefully that meant they would all live.
